Certification will benefit government and manufacturing clients

Houghton, MI (September 19, 2017) In August, the Marketing Department, Inc. (MDI), based in Houghton, MI, received its Women-Owned Small Business (WOSB) certification. This certification will benefit many of MDI’s existing clients who do business with the Department of Defense, intelligence communities, and other government agencies. Currently, the contracting goal across the federal government is to award 5% of federal contracts to women-owned small businesses. The program helps federal agencies and their contractors meet those goals.

Marketing Department, Inc. CEO Karyn Olsson was hesitant to pursue certification at first. She explains, “It really was a matter of pride. I didn’t want to companies to work with me just because I am a woman. But, once I understood the benefit for our clients, it immediately became an obvious step for us to take. With this certification, we plan to continue growing relationships with advanced manufacturers and tech companies around the region, including Wisconsin, downstate Michigan and Minnesota. It will also allow us to provide services directly to federal agencies in the areas of communications, public relations and design services.”
